What Is It?

Faith and Mental Health, Working Together

Christian-based counseling is a therapeutic approach that brings professional mental health care and Christian faith together. Rather than treating your spiritual life as separate from your emotional well-being, this approach recognizes them as deeply connected — and addresses both.

At Willow Therapy, our faith-informed therapists use evidence-based clinical methods alongside biblical values and Christian principles to help you navigate anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, life transitions, and more.

Faith integration is always shaped by your comfort level. Whether you want prayer in every session or simply a therapist who respects your Christian worldview, we follow your lead.

The Approach

How Christian-Based Counseling Works

Our therapists work with the whole person — mind, body, and spirit. Each session is tailored to your individual needs, faith background, and therapeutic goals.

1

Biblical Perspective

Scripture and Christian principles are woven in at your desired level — offering wisdom, hope, and spiritual grounding alongside clinical work.

2

Evidence-Based Methods

Your therapist draws on proven approaches like CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and trauma-focused therapy — these work hand-in-hand with faith, not against it.

3

Values-Aligned Goals

Therapy goals are shaped around what matters most to you — your relationships, your faith, and your sense of purpose and calling.

4

A Safe, Honest Space

You can bring your doubts, your grief, and your faith questions here without judgment. Healing happens when the whole truth is welcome.

Your Sessions

What to Expect in a Session

No two sessions look exactly the same — that's intentional. Your therapist will tailor each session to your goals, your faith background, and where you are emotionally.

Honest, Open Conversation

Sessions start with what's on your mind — emotionally, relationally, spiritually. Nothing is off-limits. You set the pace.

Faith-Integrated Exploration

Your therapist may invite you to consider how your beliefs speak to the challenges you're facing — or gently explore places where faith feels complicated.

Practical Therapeutic Tools

You'll work with evidence-based strategies — thought reframing, coping skills, communication tools — grounded in a Christian framework if you'd like.

Prayer & Scripture (Optional)

If desired, prayer or scripture reflection can be incorporated into sessions. This is always your choice and never assumed or required.

Goal-Setting That Fits Your Life

You and your therapist will set meaningful goals that honor both your mental health needs and your spiritual values.

A Non-Judgmental Environment

Shame has no place here. Our therapists hold a posture of grace — toward your story, your doubts, and your humanity.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Christian-based counseling?
Christian-based counseling is a faith-integrated approach to mental health therapy. It combines professional, evidence-based clinical techniques with Christian principles, biblical values, and — when desired — prayer and scripture. The goal is to support healing for the whole person: emotionally, relationally, and spiritually.
Do I have to be deeply religious to try this?
Not at all. Faith integration is always calibrated to your comfort level. Some clients want prayer and scripture throughout sessions; others simply want a therapist who understands and respects their Christian worldview. Your therapist will follow your lead.
Is this the same as pastoral counseling?
No. At Willow Therapy, all counseling is provided by licensed or supervised mental health professionals — not clergy or church leaders. Our therapists have graduate-level clinical training and hold licensure in Utah. Christian-based counseling is professional mental health therapy that honors your faith as part of the process.
Can I do Christian counseling via telehealth?
Yes. We offer faith-informed therapy both in person (Pleasant Grove and Orem) and via secure telehealth for clients anywhere in Utah. Many clients find that online sessions are just as meaningful and effective as in-person care.
Does Willow Therapy accept insurance?
Yes, we accept most major insurance plans including Select Health, BlueCross BlueShield, United Healthcare, Aetna, and more. Verify your coverage here or call us at (801) 410-0542. We do not accept Medicaid or Medicare at this time.
What issues can Christian counseling help with?
Christian-based counseling can address a wide range of concerns: anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship conflict, marriage struggles, parenting challenges, faith crises, spiritual burnout, trauma, identity questions, and major life transitions. If you're unsure whether your concern is a good fit, feel free to reach out — we're happy to help you find the right therapist.
