LDS-Focused Therapy: Finding a Therapist Who Understands Your Values

Faith can be one of the most powerful sources of comfort, identity, and resilience. For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), mental health struggles are often intertwined with spiritual beliefs, cultural expectations, and community life. That’s why many people seek LDS-focused therapy—a form of counseling that respects and incorporates your faith into the healing process.

At Willow Therapy Utah, our therapists understand the importance of aligning therapy with your personal and spiritual values. Whether you’re experiencing anxiety, depression, faith transitions, or relationship challenges, we’re here to help you feel supported both emotionally and spiritually.

What Is LDS-Focused Therapy?

LDS-focused therapy integrates clinical counseling techniques with an understanding of LDS values, culture, and faith traditions. The goal isn’t to replace your beliefs—but to help you explore emotional wellness in a way that feels consistent with your spiritual identity.

Therapists who offer LDS-informed care often understand:

  • The central role of faith, prayer, and service in daily life

  • The importance of family relationships and community

  • The emotional complexities of faith transitions or spiritual struggles

  • The value of personal revelation and agency in healing

Why Faith-Aligned Therapy Matters

Finding a therapist who “gets it” can make a huge difference. When your therapist understands your background, you don’t have to spend time explaining the cultural context of your experiences. Instead, you can focus on healing, growth, and understanding.

An LDS-focused therapist can help you:

  • Navigate feelings of guilt, shame, or perfectionism

  • Manage stress and burnout from church responsibilities

  • Work through faith questions or transitions

  • Strengthen family and marital relationships

  • Balance personal revelation with emotional wellness

One comment on “LDS-Focused Therapy: Finding a Therapist Who Understands Your Values

  1. My name is Paola Pacreu. I am a 38-year-old medical doctor from Mexico and have been living in Munich for the past few years. I am not insured in the USA and have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for five years and now I am leaving.

I am writing to inquire about the possibility of starting therapy — ideally couples or relationship counseling — either in person in Utah or online.

For the past four years, I have had a close friendship with an opera singer named Angela, who is privately insured and originally from the United States. About a year and a half ago, our friendship deepened into a very strong bond as best friends and travel companions. We moved in together last October, genuinely believing we were simply close friends.

After a trip to Japan in April, we both came to the realization that we had fallen in love. Since then, we have been navigating a complex and emotionally intense situation, marked by joy, confusion, fear, and deep inner conflict.

A significant part of this complexity comes from Angela’s experience within her faith. She comes from a very orthodox religious family that is completely opposed to our relationship. Her family has cut off contact at times and regularly sends messages warning her that she is jeopardizing her eternal salvation. At the same time, Angela herself feels a strong inner pull toward remaining an orthodox member of the church, which creates profound tension between her faith, her family loyalty, her identity, and her feelings.

We both value our faith deeply, as well as honesty, integrity, and emotional responsibility. We are not seeking to rush into decisions, but rather to understand ourselves, our relationship, and our options more clearly. We are hoping for professional guidance to help us process faith-related conflict, family pressure, identity questions, and to discern whether our healthiest path is to remain close friends or to explore building a life together.

We are looking for a therapist experienced in faith transitions or religious conflict, identity and LGBTQ+ topics, and cross-cultural relationships.

Please let us know if you have availability or could recommend a colleague you trust. We are open to sessions in either German or English.

    Warm regards,
    Paola Pacreu
